You’ve downloaded your printables — now what? Getting a great print doesn’t require professional equipment. With a few simple tips, you can produce beautiful results right from your home printer.
Choose the Right Paper
Paper makes the biggest difference in how your printable looks and feels. Here’s what to use:
- For wall art: Matte photo paper (8.5×11 or larger) gives a clean, gallery-worthy look without glare
- For planners and organizers: Cardstock (65-80 lb) holds up to daily use and feels substantial
- For everyday prints: Standard copy paper works fine, though it won’t have the same quality feel
- For party items: Glossy photo paper makes colors pop and prints look professional
Printer Settings to Get Right
Before printing, adjust these settings for the best result:
- Quality: Set to Best or High (not Draft or Normal)
- Paper type: Match to what you’re loading (Photo Paper, Matte, Plain Paper)
- Color: Make sure color printing is selected if your design has color
- Size: Always print at Actual Size — never Scale to Fit, which distorts the design
- Margins: For borderless prints, select borderless if your printer supports it
Print a Test Page First
Before loading your good paper, print a test on regular copy paper. This lets you check sizing, color, and alignment without wasting your quality paper. Once everything looks right, load your good stock and print the final version.
Use a Local Print Shop for Large or Specialty Prints
If you want large wall art prints (11×14, 16×20, or larger), a local print shop or online print service will give you far better results than a home printer. FedEx Office, Walgreens Photo, CVS Photo, and Canva Print all accept PDF uploads and offer same-day or fast turnaround.
Framing Your Prints
Standard print sizes (5×7, 8×10, A4, Letter) fit frames available at IKEA, Target, Amazon, and craft stores. A simple white or black frame with a mat elevates any print from basic to beautiful. For a gallery wall, matching frames in the same color creates a cohesive look.
